The effects of cannabis on fertility

With more cannabis becoming legal in the states, cannabis consumption is on the rise, especially among the people of reproductive age. Therefore, it’s essential to understand the effects of cannabis on fertility in men and women. Although, the link between fertility and marijuana is not straightforward. As a lot of cannabis smokers are getting pregnant and getting their partners pregnant.

As most of the people already know that smoking marijuana is not so beneficial for sperm health. But researchers still want to investigate how accurate this saying is and what is the impact of consuming marijuana on pregnancy.

An article published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal mainly highlighted the four points, that can help to understand the relationship between fertility and marijuana. The points are:

Interference of marijuana with ovulation

Its very difficult to study the effects of cannabis on female fertility as there is no direct measure to observe. But there’s a study that explains that consuming marijuana can delay the ovulation cycle by a few days.

According to Doctor Felice Gersh, high amounts of THC in marijuana can delay the production of estrogen. And when the amount of estrogen is very low then ovulation does not occur. So if there’s no ovulation then there’s no chance that an egg will be fertilized.

Reduces sperm count

The use of marijuana can also affect the sperm count in men. In research, it was found that there’s a 29 percent drop in sperm count of the men who smoke marijuana regularly. But there’s also research that shows that people who have smoked marijuana have more sperms than the people who never smoked marijuana.

It clearly shows that more research is needed. Some researchers say that the dosage of marijuana matters a lot. If a person takes a high dose of marijuana regularly then it can drop the sperm count. On the other hand, if a person takes a normal amount of marijuana then it can increase the sperms in men.

Effect of THC on the endocannabinoid system

The receptors of the endocannabinoid system help in communicating with the brain, immune system, and endocrine tissues. These receptors are present throughout the body. Endocannabinoid system is also very prevalent in the reproductive organs of both males and females.

It also has a very important role in managing hormones and human reproduction. The important compound of marijuana-THC-reacts with the endocannabinoid receptors. Due to its psychoactive impacts, it has a wide range of biological effects.

THC can interrupt many of the functions of the reproductive system. It also disturbs the balance of the whole system.

The need for more research

Researchers say that still a lot of research is needed to understand the effects of marijuana on fertility. Experts also want to know what happens if you stop using marijuana for its medical benefits.

Moreover, as marijuana has positive impacts on sleep and relieving stress. Then it’s also possible that a specific amount of marijuana can improve fertility. But till now researchers are not sure about it so they don’t recommend using marijuana for people of reproductive age.
