Around 20% of the people in the United States suffer from some variety of anxiety. Anyone having anxiety may be searching for a new way to relax the body and mind where conventional methods didn’t work. But many people feel nervous about using CBD for their condition that could also be due to lack of general understanding of the component in question.
According to Dr. Peter Bongiorno, a naturopathic doctor and the author of “Healing Depression: Integrated Naturopathic and Conventional Treatments,” many of his patients reach out to ask him whether CBD oil is the latest snake oil, or whether can it actually aid in ameliorating the symptoms of anxiety without bringing side effects.
What is CBD oil?
Cannabidiol or CBD oil is natural cannabis-based oil that includes phyto chemicals known as cannabinoids. Cannabinoids are the “happy” molecules produced naturally by the body when a person is feeling relaxed and safe or involved in some activity that makes him happy, which could include hugging someone, watching a fvourite TV show or sitting down to a highly anticipated meal.
Cannabinoids are also discharged when a person is sleeping well or exercising. Cannabinoids attach to tiny docking stations in the body known as cannabinoid receptors that assist in triggering those feeling happy responses.
Discovered in 1992, the main cannabinoid molecule is called anandamide, which basically means “happy molecule” in Sanskrit.
The cannabinoid system is the main factor in helping the body keeping itself in the right balance. This system makes sure that the stomach and intestines are functioning well, reducing inflammation and modulating pain alongside helping to keep the mood in a good range.
Studies show that the cannabinoids from CBD are able to stop the disintegration of anandamide. In easier terms, a person feels happier and more relaxed when the body retains more anandamide.
Will CBD oil make me high, like Cannabis?
CBD certainly does not give the feeling of being high even when consumed in high quantity, so anyone looking to get high will be most disappointed. CBD oil supplement comes from the cannabis plant. Hemp is a cannabis shrub and is a close relative of marijuana.
However, the CBD derived from hemp has barely any THC or tetra-hydro-cannabinoids. THC is the component present in marijuana that contains psychoactive effects and also gives a high. In fact, several studies carried out on CBD revealed that CBD itself is capable of countering the adverse effects of THC, which includes changed appetite, weight gain, and psychosis.
Is CBD oil legal?
CBD that comes from hemp is legal in all 50 states. And as mentioned earlier, CBD has no functioning measure of THC. There is a miniscule amount present, which is not enough to give the sensation of a high. As a result, there is no legal concern linked to marijuana.
Is CBD good for Mental Wellness?
For many years, the expert committee on drug dependence at World Health Organization has shared an extensive list of conditions that CBD may be of great assistance. Numerous trials carried out on both humans and animals showed that CBD may be effective to reduce the feelings of segregation, relieve symptoms of autism, and lessen the adverse effects of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
So it is apparent that CBD works to relax the brain and maintain the functioning of hippocampus, which is a brain region central for memory and healthy emotion. A research stated that CBD could lower social anxiety in a way similar to Valium (Diazepam) or Ipsapirone.
In 2012, a double-blind, randomized clinical trial examined the effects of CBD extract for psychosis. In the trial, 40 patients were administered with CBD or an antipsychotic. Both treatments aided symptoms of the patients evenly.
The group taking CBD enjoyed much fewer side effects and no issues with maneuverability, body weight, or hormonal dysfunction — all of which are familiar side effects of antipsychotic drugs. CBD oil has also been studied for its effects in childhood epilepsy.
Is CBD safe for use?
There is now mounting evidence supporting the claim that the use of CBD is extremely safe. In fact, the use of FDA-approved CBD was studied in children suffering from epilepsy, which notes that both children and adults can use it safely.
While CBD possesses the benefits to relax the body and help with pain and inflammation, it does not restrain the breathing complex of the brain as compared to opioid drugs. This is the reason why there is not much apprehension, even when overindulged, that one would have for sedating medications.
For more than 5 decades, medical research has been collecting data to support the safety of CBD. Standard dosage of 10mg to 100mg per day shows no adverse effects. Even in a study where patients were administered 1,280 mg per day did not encounter any issue.
The director of the National Institute of Drug Abuse has stated that CBD is completely secure, and now the FDA has also approved CBD oil for use in children suffering from epilepsy.
Dr. Peter Bongiorno has been working with CBD in his practice for more than 2 years and has not witnessed a problem. At times when patients get extra relaxed, it can give them a strange and unfamiliar feeling that can be worrying to patients who are not used to experiencing calm.
It is important to note that, because of the way the liver functions, CBD may impinge on the clearance of other drugs a person is taking alongside. As always, it’s highly recommended to speak with a doctor before getting started on any new natural supports, particularly if taking prescription medications.
Can CBD oil cause a positive result in a drug test?
As CBD has nearly no THC, so in theory, there is very little to no chance that it will cause a positive drug test. Plus, the follow-up assenting test for marijuana is too explicit to turn up positive from CBD.
Having said this, it is imperative to buy CBD from companies who develop it from an assortment of hemp holding the lowest percentage of THC.
In case one is not sure and may not want to take a chance, it is always good to find out more about it from reliable sources, including a doctor.
How much CBD oil should I take?
It is usually recommended that patients begin with 15mg of CBD once or twice in a day. CBD oil is best consumed with food. Instead of self-prescribing, it is strongly suggested to work with a practitioner who is knowledgeable in natural medicine and who has experience dealing with CBD, especially if using other medications and/or suffering from mental health conditions.
How about the CBD beverages and foods?
At present, a lot of companies are filling the shelves with CBD-infused product. A common guess would be that a vast number of these products are not good quality and may contain little or no CBD.
For anyone planning to use CBD oil as a supplementation for mental wellness, ask the doctor for a premium quality edition that can be taken in a prescribed dosage. It is best not to try and get CBD through other products where the quality and amount are not clearly stated.
