Consuming cannabis-based medicine has a great effect on children with a severe and rare type of epilepsy. It also cut seizures almost in half for children. Researches are still going on finding the effects of cannabis on seizures. As cannabis has the potential to treat symptoms of seizures and is great in reducing seizures in children.

CBD and seizures

CBD is one of the main cannabinoids found within the cannabis plant. It has many medical benefits and can treat a variety of medical disorders. The oil structure of cannabis works by associating with receptors on nerve cells. Moreover, the non-psychoactive effects of CBD make it safe to use and do not get users high. Recent researchers have suggested CBD can also treat epilepsy.

A severe type of epilepsy is Dravet syndrome. It can affect the mind and can lead to prolonged seizures. As cannabis has non-psychoactive effects and does not cause high. So research suggest that cannabis has the ability to treat Dravet syndrome.

A recent study investigated 120 children with Dravet syndrome and severe seizures. The children were given either a placebo or CBD. Both of them were given orally. The oral solution with CBD had 20 mg of cannabinoid per 1kg of body weight.

Children were also given anti-epileptic drugs. The results of the overall study were quite appealing. It had proved that CBD has the ability to treat the symptoms of epilepsy. The patients who took CBD had a 50 percent reduction in seizures. While there was only 27 percent in the placebo group.

In the CBD group, the frequency of seizures was reduced but there were no significant reductions in the placebo group.  An interesting thing is that 5 percent of the children became seizure-free. That’s a great victory for CBD. As no such medication is available that can completely control seizures in children. Moreover, CBD did not have any side effects.

Use of CBD in children

People had a misconception that children can’t take CBD. As CBD could make the children intoxicated. But now experts say that the actual medication for children has a very low amount of THC. It contains 95% CBD and only 5% THC.

CBD does not cause any high and is safe to use for children. And 5% of THC is not harmful to children. THC levels are always low for children even at high doses.

The dose of CBD

The dosage of CBD matters especially in the case of children. A very high dose can have adverse effects. The patients who took a high dosage of CBD without the recommendation of the doctor demonstrated some symptoms. That includes vomiting, diarrhea, fatigue, and improper functioning of liver.

These results can easily be avoided with an alternation in dose. Experts say that people should not take CBD without the recommendation of the doctor. Moreover, to see the positive effects patients should take CBD regularly. And nowadays getting cannabis is not a problem. As the legalization of marijuana has allowed users to access cannabis easily.

Epidiolex, a cannabis drug is also approved by the FDA. It is great in treating seizures and is safe to use.
