Study shows cannabis can treat PTSD

Published

on

A study has shown that cannabis can significantly reduce the symptoms of PTSD in the patients.

What is PTSD?

PTSD or post traumatic stress disorder is a mental health condition. Generally, the memory of a terrifying or dangerous event triggers the disorder. It has a range of symptoms including flashbacks, anxiety, break downs, nightmares and lashing out.

After going through a traumatizing incident, the individual might face difficulty adjusting and coping up with reality. However, through medications and proper health care, there is a great chance of getting better and overcoming the recurring fears.

About the Study

A study has shown the cannabis can reduce the severity of the symptoms of PTSD. Patients reported that the extent of symptoms was reduced by almost half. The study was led by Carrie Cutler, who is the assistant professor of Psychology at Washington State University.

The research team analyzed the information from over 400 subjects. The team followed the patients and tracked the changes in their symptoms before and after using cannabis. An application, Strainprint, tracked the improvements of the patients. Through the data, the researchers then analyzed which type of cannabis would work best for each patient.
Overall, the patients used the application over 31 months, for 11,000 times.

Results

The study was published in the Journal of Affective Disorders. It showed that the use reduced the intrusions by 62%, irritability by 67%, flashbacks by 51% and anxiety by 57%. However, it is to be noted that the relief was only temporary, and the severity went back to normal after a while.

According to Cuttler, “The study suggests that cannabis does reduce symptoms of PTSD acutely, but it might not have longer term beneficial effects on the underlying condition”.

She further added, “Working with this model, it seems that cannabis will temporarily mask symptoms, acting as a bit of a band aid, but once the period of intoxication wears off, the symptoms can return.”

The investigative study gave some deep insights into the use of cannabis for treating mental health conditions, most significantly PTSD. However, the study was only limited to some carefully selected individuals. The results might have been completely coincidental.

Previously, researchers have done some control studies using nabilone. Nabilone is a synthetic type of THC. However, there are no definitive results yet.

This study focused on several variables while analyzing the subjects. However, the researchers noted no difference in the results with different concentrations of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (cannabidiol).

Cuttler said, “We need more studies that look at whole plant cannabis because this is what people are using much more than the synthetic cannabinoids. It is difficult to do good placebo-controlled trials with whole plant cannabis, but they’re still really needed.”
