Cannabis use and Depression – What do experts say?

mm

Published

on

Experts have conducted a series of researches to see the connection between cannabis use and depression in individuals. While some see it as a trigger for depression, others stress the need to evaluate if the mental health conditions were already preceding cannabis use.

Can cannabis alleviate symptoms of depression?

Compounds like CBD and THC found in cannabis have been scientifically proven to alleviate symptoms of PTSD. Their ability to interact with the endocannabinoid system of the body is what qualifies them for soothing symptoms of depression in patients.

Since the chemical structure of endocannabinoids compounds is similar to cannabis, using it may address any dysfunctions therein. By restoring the normal function of the endocannabinoid system, symptoms of depression may be eased to a certain extent.

One of the major drawbacks related to relying on cannabis for coping with depression is the addiction that follows use. According to a study, about 30% of people who resort to cannabis use will eventually become addicted to it. The percentage sees a spike specially in those individuals who are under the age of 18.

Link between cannabis use and depression

A large number of researchers believe that increased cannabis use can worsen mental health indicators.

This association has been studied by Gabriella Gobbi, and her colleagues in McGill University, Montreal. Their main focus has been on analyzing adolescent behavioral changes that occur with an increased cannabis use.

The team in their findings concluded that “The adolescent brain is indeed still under development and psychotropic drugs used at this time may thus alter the physiological neurodevelopment, especially of the frontal cortex and limbic system.”

They discovered that cannabis use at such an early age results in an increased tendency of developing depression. This was specially noted in the age group of of 14 to 15 year old cannabis users, who showed a much significant risk of suicidal behavior.

These conclusion were bases on a population sample comprising of about 23,317 people.

George Mammen from the Institute for Mental Health Policy Research, Centre for Addiction and Mental Health in Toronto also supports the idea that cannabis use can trigger mental disorders . “Among individuals living specifically with PTSD, panic disorder, bipolar disorder or a depressive disorder – using cannabis is associated with negative symptomatic outcomes over time. Compared to those who did not use cannabis, those who used cannabis were more likely to experience long-term persistent symptoms and higher severity of symptoms.”

The researchers in this study still stressed the need for further studies on the topic. This was mainly due the limitations pertaining to their study. Firstly, it was not a clinical trial, and secondly the source of cannabis used by the study participants was not legal. Illegal marijuana likely had a higher content of THC, leading to more dramatic psychoactive outcomes.

Amotivational Syndrome

Studies have also found that regular users of cannabis may experience a phenomenon known as ‘amotivational syndrome’. This causes them to undergo depressive symptoms like social withdrawal, lower performance in daily routine and apathy.

Despite of a clear relationship between cannabis use and amotivational syndrome, scientists are still reluctant to it the only cause behind this condition. The data collected on this subjected however points to cannabis being the main trigger behind this depressive condition.

Long-term effects of cannabis dependence

With the increasing legalization and uplift of taboos associated with marijuana usage globally, long-term usage is very much expected. Recreational usage of this drug more is becoming a cause of concern among experts with the relaxed laws. This is mainly due to the side-effects that will likely follow prolonged usage of the drug.

Different studies have gathered enough data to point the cognitive, emotional and other psychoactive side-effects of the drug. In addition, the drug has also been linked with autism in certain studies.

Due to all of these reasons, there is a need to ensure public awareness on the subject. With the side-effects and repercussions known, the damages on health can be minimized.
