TGA Receives Proposal To Legalize Medicinal MDMA And Psilocybin

TGA considers proposal to allow MDMA/psilocybin treatment

Australia is a nation of many things, and progressive is one of them. From gun control in the 90s, to same-sex marriage to sex work, the country has legalized and regulated it all. Nowadays, the conversation around recreational and medicinal drugs is rather pertinent. The regulating body in charge of substances is the TGA (Therapeutic Goods Administration). Every year they approve or deny petitions to legalize controversial substances, such as marijuana to treat cancer, for instance.

Recently, an interesting but highly controversial request has been made of them. This comes from the MMA (Mind Medicine Australia), a non-profit psychotherapy group that specializes in PTSD and depression. They have requested that both MDMA (“ecstasy”) and psilocybin (the psychoactive chemical in “magic mushrooms” be legalized to treat their patients. Both of these are strong psychoactive agents and are currently illegal.

The MMA wants to treat PTSD and depression with these drugs, if the TGA so allows

Both PTSD and depression, in the eyes of mental health skeptics, long faced negligence or suppression until quite recently. This is why there exists only scant research and understanding of both conditions, unlike more ‘famous’ disorders. Both conditions have salient characteristics like neurosis and feelings of extreme distress. The MMA argues that this could be remedied well with strong psychoactive agents.

These psychoactive agents alter the biochemistry of the brain’s pleasure, reward, pain and anxiety centers. MDMA is a powerful stimulant, and psychedelic that provides the user with energy. However, there have been several health concerns raised by this (users at raves have even danced till they dropped of hyperthermia). On the other hand, psilocybin makes the user hallucinate strongly for hours on end. It can also lead to reckless behavior during the ‘trip’.

Studies on the efficacy of these drugs show conflicting results

The problem with strong, ‘hard’ drugs like psilocybin and MDMA is their severity. Unlike cannabis, which has several well-known health benefits, these drugs come off as sketchy in terms of medical applications. Some studies highlight the way that magic mushrooms help control PTSD symptoms. Others show that MDMA is useful for anxiety, stress and forms of depression.

Conversely, documented cases of MDMA addiction exist. This comes coupled with withdrawal effects in many users, and fatalities in the aforementioned raves and other settings. MDMA also has the tendency of abuse along with alcohol, opiates or cocaine. These all have their own side effects. Users of psilocybin often end up with consequences of reckless behavior, sometimes harming others around them. This is why several experts caution that we currently know too little about these drugs.

The TGA will take its time considering the proposal, but it is unlikely to approve it

To be realistic, it seems unwise to hold optimism for the state of MDMA and psilocybin legalization. While most governing bodies hold more lenience towards experimental treatments, there will always exist reservations. Public safety is and should be held to a higher standard than the whims of unorthodox researchers. It is important to note that drugs like CBD and THC, from cannabis, also underwent careful testing and investigation before approval for any treatments.

Until the day comes that these two drugs get legalized for medical use, more work awaits. While there do seem to be several therapeutic benefits, the jury is still out on whether or not the risks outweigh the advantages. Stay tuned for more updates!
