Texas to Expand Marijuana Law

Many patients suffering from severe autism are now referring to medical marijuana in Texas. As pharmaceutical drugs have failed to provide for a better cure, medical marijuana alleviates the symptoms of other disorders like cerebral palsy as well. With all these conditions, it is becoming a dire need to legalize marijuana on a bigger scale to promise an effective way of treatment.

There Is A Limited Access To Legal Marijuana In The State

House committee in Texas opened a window for legalizing medical marijuana to a larger scale last week.  According to House Bill 1365, there will be an expansion of the already existing laws. The above rules allowed physicians to recommend marijuana in deficient quantities to treat patients with different diseases and conditions. State Representative Eddie Lucio, D-Brownsville presented with the bill. It is a dual party passage with a vote count of 121-23, It is acknowledgeable in the legislation as Texas out of all other states has moved at a relatively much slower pace towards broadening of the law.

However, there is still a long way to go as the bill has to go through a strict house Senate in 2017 at a court hearing on the matter of legalizing medical cannabis. The representative Lucio declared that he had lupus disease a few years ago. His witness Natasha Harper-Madison also had the same disease. Lucio reported that he was a living example of the people who were suffering from painful symptoms of the disease. There is a considerable need for research about the effects of medical marijuana in alleviating the symptoms. According to him, it was the most comprehensive and practical bill for the advocates.

Dozens of families with members suffering from chronic and painful symptoms have a lot of crowded committee hearings. They had been agreeing that marijuana has proved to be way more effective than the pharmaceutical drugs in reducing the symptoms. Not only that, the pharmaceutical drugs tended to produce side effects that significantly hurdled in the recovery process. As the laws are not regulated in favor of the substance, many families have to go undercover and use marijuana as medical refugees.

Compassionate Use Act and Existing Medical Marijuana Law

Legislative bodies voted on the Compassionate Use Act in 2015. Fort Worth Republican Representative Stephanie Klick designed the plan according to which there was an allowance for using marijuana with patients who have epilepsy in small dosage. However, this law was not comprehensive and did not have room for other problems other than epilepsy. Heather Fazio declared that it ruled out quite a significant number of citizens of Texas from the HB 1365. Around half of the doctors are an integral part of the program as mentioned earlier. Also, there were three dispensaries launched under the act according to last year statistics.

Criminal Justice Reform And Medical Marijuana Bill

Bodies signed on a new bill in last week’s meeting. It will allow a little extension of the Compassionate Use Act 2015 law. Overall, officials filed around twenty bills of medical marijuana in the last session. Out of the twenty, officials considered around seven bills in a subcommittee that also included HB 1365. However, the representatives in the Senate did not take the related measures. Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick announced a bill to reduce penalties for marijuana possession previously. Meanwhile, the rule highlights the reform that relates to criminal justice, officials and spokespersons declared that they could be a catalyst in further expanding the laws of medical marijuana.

National Conference of State Legislatures states that around 12 states allow limited use of the substance in America. Texas is one of them. This bill calls for an expansion in the strict existing regulations.
