Treatment of Tinnitus with Cannabis- Is it Possible?

Treatment of Tinnitus with Cannabis

A well known clinical audiologist Dr. Dennis Colucci explains researches based on the treatment of tinnitus with cannabis in his article published in The Hearing Journal. This research is published and is available online for the public.

Tinnitus and its impact on the patient’s life

American Tinnitus Association reports Tinnitus as an audiological or neurological disorder in which the patients perceive sounds which are not from any real source. The condition is an indication of some underlying illness. The patients report hearing of sounds at irregular intervals. Sounds may be of various intensity and pitch such as ringing, buzzing, hissing or humming either in single ear or both.

There are various factors responsible for inducing such symptoms. These may include age-related hearing loss, an ear injury or a disturbance in auditory nerves.

The condition can influence a person’s life very badly. Especially when it interferes with patient’s perception of real sounds.

No medicine can cure the condition completely. However, some antiepileptic and antidepressant medicines with some cognitive behavioral therapy techniques can help in managing the symptoms.

There is an obvious lack of evidence and investigation in proving the efficacy of cannabis in this regard. Some physicians consider tinnitus a form of sensory epilepsy because in this cochlear cells become hyperactive. Medicinal marijuana has proved effective for the treatment of epilepsy. Some researchers have assumed that treatment of tinnitus with cannabis could be a possibility.

It is quite possible that CBD may target the TRPV1 receptors due to its therapeutic quality. Expert Committee on Drug Dependence of the World Health reveals CBD as nonpsychoactive, nonaddictive and does not give a high.

Researches about Effects of Cannabis on Tinnitus

Dr. Colucci refers to the study by Tabrizi, el at. In an article in The US National Library of Medicine. Tabrizi analyzes the system of endocannabinoids that hinder the action of TRPV1 receptors responding to cell injury or pain. Fiskerstrand identified a genetic mutation that disturbs the functioning of endocannabinoids system.

Ghosh, et al. delivered endocannabinoid to rats via transtympanic administration. Rats were later injected with cisplatin, an antineoplastic drug. The results showed that administration of endocannabinoid helped in the recovery of hearing in cisplatin-induced rats.

Smith and Zheng tried to find out the effect of CBD and THC on tinnitus in an experiment on rats. However, the results were unclear. They found that the use of cannabinoids on noise-exposed rats could make tinnitus worse.

In his article, Dr. Colucci has laid great emphasis on the need for further studies about the treatment of tinnitus with cannabis. In order to study the healing quality of CBD and THC, various factors have to be considered. Both the compounds can affect very differently depending on the strain, concentration, and right dose.

The medicine could act differently whether the user inhales the drug or uses as a tincture, ingested or applied to the skin.

Major issues that inhibit further researches are concerns about non-adult use and safety-related matters, labeling, and concentration of products.

Dr. Colucci is hopeful that changing laws about cannabis would facilitate further research.
