Hemp seed oil containing CBD and THC in fixed quantities are beneficial in alleviating and even ending seizures in children. Research suggests that it is helpful for even drug-resistant epileptic attacks.
Scientists from the University of Saskatchewan performed this study. It appears in the Frontiers in Neurology. Children’s Hospital Foundation by Jim Pattinson provided financial aid for the study.
Children who have severe attacks of epilepsy do experience better life quality with a low dosage of medical hemp oil. The researchers analyzed the effects of the oil with a carefully thought ratio. It included CBD with 95 percent purity and rest of the percentage with tetra hydra cannabidiol.
They kept the bigger percentage of CBD and a smaller one of THC in the regimen
Scientists made this composition with the aid of scientific evidence. They also fixed a specific amount of the THC. The team found no intoxicating effects of the THC on using plant extracts with CBD enrichment. In the study, three out of seven children did not show any signs of seizures after using the seed oil regimen.
Most of the positive effects of using hemp seed oil were quite drastic. Some of the children were able to communicate with their families for the first time efficiently. Whereas, some children who were not able to talk or crawl were able to do so after the doses. They felt connected to their families and other loved ones.
Children with epileptic encephalopathy suffer from frequent seizures the most
Many studies have suggested cannabis items with cannabidiol to be efficient in providing aid to control epileptic seizures in children. These children include ones having epileptic encephalopathy, a congenital and severe epilepsy type.
However, most of the children do not have access to cannabis products because of a lack of knowledge. Most physicians are unaware of the required dose for the patients. Moreover, the presence of THC in the regimen makes some health care workers dubious of it.
What did the study suggest?
The study suggested that most children showed a significant alleviation in their seizures upon the daily dosage of CBD. The total dosage consisted of 5 to 6 mg of cannabis extract per kg of the weight of the child daily. Scientists also tested a dose increment to 10 to 12 mg/kg daily. They noted a dramatic alleviation in the seizures in more than half of the population under study.
The scientists realize that they have taken an important step in paving the way for a scientific answer to find treatment for epileptic seizures. There is a need to find the perfect dose and composition of the product. While administering this product, physicians will also need to monitor levels of CBD and THC in the children’s bloodstreams.
The children did not respond to multiple anti-convulsant medicines. The failure of the medication in these children motivated the scientists to find potential ways to alleviate the symptoms.
This research is a ray of hope for patients who show resistance to the drugs for epilepsy. However, there is a need for more research to apply this regimen on a vast scale.
Possibility of Brain Disorders in COVID-19 Patients
Recent researches revealed that people with mild COVID-19 symptoms have a chance of developing fatal brain disorders.
COVID-19 is an infection that differently attacks every individual. Some people develop acute respiratory problems while others only develop mild symptoms like fever, cough etc. Mostly, doctors tend to ignore the patients with mild symptoms as they get normal on their own. However, the recent reports revealed some shocking and disturbing detail about the virus.
Brain Disorders in COVID-19 Patients
Coronavirus can trigger brain disorders in patients. Scientists have warned that doctors may be overlooking signs of brain disorders in patients with mild coronavirus symptoms. Neurologists in U.K. found over 40 coronavirus patients with severe brain inflammation, nerve damage, delirium and even a stroke. This is a serious condition called acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (Adem). Cases of Adem have risen from one case a month to 2-3 weekly cases in the months of April and May.
Doctors are particularly worried because no virus has previously affected the brain as COVID-19 is. A 55-year-old COVID-19 patient without any history of mental illness, started behaving oddly the day after getting discharged from the medical center. She was having recurrent hallucinations. Another 47 year-old woman was admitted with a headache. However, later, she became unresponsive. The doctors conducted an emergency surgery to cut out a portion of her skull to release pressure on her inflammed brain.
The way COVID-19 affects the brain hasn’t been observed before with any other virus. This could very well be due to the fact that the virus has numerous mutations. However, that is just speculation for now.
So, what needs to be done?
Well, clinicians need to be on their toes about these complications of the coronavirus. Patients with memory issues, fatigue, weakness, numbness, or cognitive symptoms need special attention. Healthcare workers, GPs, and physicians should also consult neurologists in regard to these cases.
Note that these are all precautions. It does not neglect the fact that complete recovery isn’t possible. In most cases, the coronavirus does not involve the brain.
Because of the intensity of the symptoms of the virus most of the patients in hospitals cannot be examined through brain scanners or other procedures. Therefore, the full spectrum of brain disorders caused by the corona virus cannot be determined just yet. Efficient research needs to be done to determine the complete depth of the complications.
One major concern!
One major concern with this new discovery is the possibility of the virus to leave the affected people with brain disorders that could only become apparent later in life. The number of such cases might not be as staggering, but that is still a major concern.
This has happened before in flu outbreak in 1918. After the pandemic, almost a million patients came up with brain disorders.
It is far too early to give a verdict, but it could still haunt the people like a ghost. Like most subtle brain disorders, the effects might not become apparent at once. However, in the years to come it could affect the lifestyles of a lot of people.
One should hope that it doesn’t come to that. But, with a pandemic affecting people by thousands everyday, being alert is the wisest thing to do.
Newsom Orders to Shut Bars in California due to COVID-19
Owing to the rapid increase in the number of coronavirus cases in California, Governor Newsom ordered in 7 counties to close all the bars and hangout spots.
This order includes bars, brewery clubs and pubs that serve alcoholic drinks without serving food at the same time. However, the ones with the food policy can stay open but they will have to follow stricter rules for dine-in. The government has asked them to focus more on the take out and patio services.
Counties to SHUT Bars
This order was issued on Sunday by governor’s state public health director, Dr. Sonia Angell. The seven counties where the bars shall remain closed are Los Angeles, Kern, Fresno, San Joaquin, Kings, Tulare and Imperial. The government has decided to implement strict policy on eight other counties with high number of COVID-19 cases.
Governor Newsom said in a statement that COVID-19 is still rapidly spreading in California. He said that it is crucial to follow this measure to reduce the spread of coronavirus with the highest number of cases. Los Angeles reported a total of 2,4542 cases of COVID-19 on Sunday, which is the second largest number of Coronavirus cases for L.A.
The authorities said that they are closely monitoring the Coronavirus situation throughout the country. They are taking steps to decrease the increasing rates of transmission. Closing down the bars in these states can greatly decrease the transmission rate in these areas.
Increasing Number of Cases
This decision was taken after closely monitoring the number of COVID-19 cases, hospitalization rates and what they describe as concerning patterns of transmission in those counties. State issued guidelines on 5th June regarding the reopening of bars. The bars came back in business on 18th of June just to last for less than a couple of weeks.
According to state health officials, bars are a risky place. People remove their masks frequently to have drinks. There is loud music due to which people usually speak louder than usual. This results in spreading more airborne particles. Moreover, almost all the customers are in close proximity with each other. Tracing back the cause of infection gets difficult.
Economy in DANGER
Owner of Elvie’s, Angie Sharma-Weisberger said they reopened Elvie’s on the first day they were permitted to. They installed plexiglass at the bars and tables and trained their staff on protocols to reduce the risk of spread of the virus between themselves and customers. However, despite all the efforts, their business is closing down. She said that the government must rething about such processes. They can’t keep shutting businesses on a moment’s notice.
Upon this, many other bar owners also came forward to support Angie. COVID-19 has brought much damage to people all across the world. It has damaged people in unimaginable ways. The virus forced people to shut down their businesses and accelerated unemployment. This might be the greatest wave of unemployment that the world has ever seen. People are not only fighting the COVID-19 virus; they are also fighting hunger.
California got alarmed when the number of cases reached 215,000 this Sunday. With Hospitalizations and infection rates, the government is bound to shut public places since the only sure way to escape Coronavirus is through Social Distancing.
FDA Approves Private Production of Medical Cannabis
The Food and Drug Administration just announced that it is preparing a bill to remove the 5-year ban from private production of medical cannabis in Thailand.
The last decade has seen several reforms in favor of legalization of cannabis. A number of U.S states have voted in the favor of the movement. However, the coronavirus crisis has halted several processes. World’s economy has crashed, and numerous corporations and businesses are being shut down.
This gave rise to a wave of cannabis legalization, particularly in the United States. The main idea was to improve revenue from the cannabis industry. However, no definitive results have been seen yet. Due to limited communication and movement, the sales have reduced, and hence, no effect has been seen on the economy so far.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently announced that it is planning on removing the 5-year ban from private production of medicinal cannabis in Thailand. A draft of the bill is currently being prepared.
Further, two ministerial regulations drafts for marijuana and hemp, are also “inching ahead”, as the lockdown restrictions are easing down. The legislation would allow foreigners to get involved in companies as long as they hold less than one third of the shares.
Further, international travelers would also be able to apply for cannabis import and export licenses. This would allow for easy movement of cannabis medications in and out of the countries.
Currently, only state agencies, government related farmers and private universities have the license for export and import of cannabis. Non-state agencies are not eligible for the license.
The ban also exempts companies from applying for a license to grow cannabis or even manufacture its medicine. The ban was announced in February 2019 and was meant to last for 5 years, till February 2024.
Even though, the main idea behind the ban was to prevent people from exploiting the drug, it has led to shortages of several CBD medicines in the market. Patients who need CBD oil for their treatment have no access either.
FDA has announced to lift the ban. However, it is only applicable on the production of cannabis for herbal or Thai traditional medicine. The modern and advanced CBD pharmaceutical companies are still banned from the production.
The new law would allow companies to apply for a cannabis and hemp growing license directly. It will also allow them to industrially manufacture CBD oil. This can then be used for medicinal purposes. However, the license would only be granted if the products fall in herbal goods or traditional medicine category.
Imports of cannabis will remain restricted. Only seeds will be allowed to be imported from overseas to grow cannabis and hemp plants in the country. Foreign travelers will remain unaffected. They will be allowed to carry CBD oil after receiving a license.
