Is the Coronavirus Treating Drug Running Out?

Dexamethasone Running Out

Recently, a study revealed the utility of Dexamethasone in treating the Coronavirus patients. It reduced the risk of deaths of COVID-19 patients by one-third. Practitioners took to this drug to save the lives of their patients. However, with its increased demand another question has raised. Is Dexamethasone running out of markets?

COVID-19 started in Wuhan, a province of China. Slowly, it made its way across the seas and became a pandemic. The gravity of situation increased and the death toll reached to hundreds of thousands. The number of cases per day went as high as 180,000. While a few countries were successful in containing the virus, others got hit badly. The U.S. has faced 2,364,840 cases and 122,318 deaths till now.

Effectiveness of the Drug

Governments around the world enforced lockdowns. However, these lockdowns badly affected the economy. Lockdowns also led to starvation of the daily-wagers. In these difficult times, a study revealed that Dexamethasone, an abundant and cheap corticosteroid is very useful in treating Coronavirus patients.

Dexamethasone reduces the risk of death by one third for patients who are on ventilators. It reduces the risk of death by one fifth for the patients who are receiving supplemental oxygen. Dexamethasone is a very cheap and readily available steroid. Therefore, it seemed to be a ray of hope for people all over the world.

Is Dexamethasone Running Out?

With its proved utility in saving the COVID-19 patients, its demand increased exponentially. However, the number of Coronavirus patients mounts to millions all over the world. It is quite a possibility that Dexamethasone is running out of the markets. Some people have even started hoarding the supplies of dexamethasone. People are hoarding anything that slightly proves useful in treating the virus. Many people are involved in black marketing of supplies.

Some experts say that it is too early to say anything about global shortage. Others are certain that this situation will lead to global shortage. Two types of the drugs are available in the market. The injectable Dexamethasone is the preferred formulation for medication. However, it is more difficult to produce than the oral dexamethasone.

Working of the Drug

Out of all the patients that received the medication, mostly the effects were trivial and unnoticeable. However, for the sickest patients especially those on ventilators, the drug is a major life-saver. The intravenous medicine is in shortage in the U.S. and they are largely dependent on the oral medicine.

The Coronavirus triggers inflammation while your body tries to fight it off and this drug calms this effect. It calms the immune system and the stimulus triggering inflammation. However, some practitioners say that this can weaken the immune system. This hampers their ability to fight common viruses like H1N1 and influenza.

Dexamethasone is supplied by two major Indian companies, Wockhardt and Cadila Healthcare. Wockhardt has a “very limited” supply available for export, but is working to produce “enormous capacity” of both oral and intravenous dexamethasone.

Although we are not sure when we might run out of Dexamethasone or if we ever will but there is still a risk of it. The only sure way to eliminate the novel COVID-19 is by complete social distancing.

Japan is the world’s hub for technology and innovation. It is the second most developed country of the world with the third largest nominal GDP. However, Japan Was hit by a major setback in the World War II, when its two cities Hiroshima and Nagasaki were bombarded with atomic bombs. After the nuclear attack, Japan had to rebuilt its economy from the scratch.

Japan’s declining workforce

Japanese set up a new foundation for their nation to flourish. Hard work, diligence and honesty made them one of the best nations on the modern world. However, the recent decline in Japan’s population has been very concerning for the Japanese government. This decline is also worrisome because Japan is losing much of its workforce.

Japanese were reluctant to bring in foreign workforce so they took to technology to overcome this problem. Mira Robotics developed their ‘Ugo’ series to replace the workforce in factories and other areas. This robot is particularly useful in assembling things and routine chores.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk Speaks in Favor of Cannabis in Recent Tweet

Tesla’s Chief Executive Officer, Elon Musk, tweeted something earlier today, that seemed to raise a lot of questions. The billionaire seemed to question the current law of imprisonment for the possession of marijuana. No one can really expect to post on social media and get monotonous reactions. As expected, while some may have been on board with his tweet, others didn’t seem to be the biggest fan.

Now, this isn’t the first time Elon Musk made a tweet about marijuana. Earlier in 2018, Musk had reportedly tweeted a “cannabis joke” in reference to his Tesla’s stocks and shares. Elon Musk first tweeted the initial tweet, leaving his 35.6M followers in ambiguity about the context that he was referring to. However, his first tweet was quickly followed by the next which then cleared the uncertainty. Within an hour, the billionaire had received 27.2K retweets and 112K likes.

“Major felony to essential business”

Musk referred to cannabis as progressing from a “major felony to essential businesses”. The journey of cannabis from legalization to becoming a necessity is not hidden. While initially regarded as a crime in the U.S., things changed for the industry during the pandemic. Many legal states, including California, allowed cannabis businesses to remain unaffected during the state-wide lockdown. This action added cannabis stores and dispensaries in the same list as the hospitals and other medical healthcare facilities. This allowed them to continue their businesses uninterrupted during the lockdown.

Not only did this recognize cannabis as a necessity, but it was also responsible for the sales spikes caused in the last few months. When the public was “panic-buying” toilet paper, they added cannabis to their lists too.

Imprisonment laws

Press Progress

However, imprisonment due to cannabis is still a concerning issue. Musk pointed out that despite the journey from a felony drug to a recognized necessity, the imprisonment laws simply “don’t make sense” and “isn’t right”. However, he does have enough evidence to back up his statement.

Despite the legalization of recreational cannabis and/or medical cannabis in 33 states across the U.S., federal law still continues to consider the drug as a federal crime. This includes the possession, buying, and selling of the drug. The conflict between federal and state laws leads to technical legalities where the consumers and cannabis businesses have to be extremely careful in reference to the drug.

Musk tweeted his initial tweet, probably remembering the allegations from the SEC for his cannabis tweet that caused significant market confusion and disruption. However, 10 minutes later, he said what he had to say, with no misleading statements this time. His followers were not too slow while replying to his tweets and reminding him about his last cannabis tweet from 2 years ago. However, many showed enthusiasm in favor of his statement.

Celebrities advocating for cannabis

While it has only been a few hours since Musk tweeted in favor of cannabis, let’s give it time to see what other celebrities might have to say about it. Many celebrities are well-known for their advocacy for cannabis. This includes many loved and proclaimed artists such as Morgan Freeman, Mike Tyson, in their respective fields. While the advocacy stemmed from cannabis being the cure to their health reasons for many, for some it was a very relaxing drug.

However, questions arise regarding the sudden tweet, especially when Musk waited for 10 minutes to post the original tweet. Why did he tweet this knowing it could get him in trouble? Does he want to count as an advocate for marijuana? The only person who can answer this is Elon Musk himself.
