Why is Marijuana Getting Popular Among Senior Citizens?

Marijuana is apparently most likely to be popular among young adults. However, with its legalization in different states, the trends have noticeably changed their course. Citizens over 60 to 70 years of age have reported marijuana to be highly effective in relieving acute pain. These pains often resulted from bone fractures and post-surgical conditions.

According to a general survey, these older citizens generally did not take any supplementary substance along with cannabis. They avoided alcohol, cigarettes, and other addictive nonprescription drugs. There is a small number of senior citizens frequently using cannabis in the United States. However, the number is seeming to be growing.

National Survey on Drug Use and Health conducted a survey for observing the statistics of using Marijuana among older citizens. According to it, there has been a sharp increase of 250 percent of the people who are over 65 and use marijuana between 2006 and 2013.

There is a lack of evidence in reporting the number of people over 65 who use marijuana for the only recreation. There is no insightful distinction between its medical and recreational usage whatsoever. However, there are some research-based data that provides a closer look into the matter:

A 2014 survey showed that around 50 percent of adults use cannabis partially as a medicine.

People most often use medical marijuana to get quick relief from pain. Out of the total population, the group to suffer from acute and chronic pain are mostly the people over the age of 65. Around 53 percent of the U.S. senior citizens complained to have troublesome pain that lasted for at least a month.

Other conditions for which the citizens have been using medical marijuana are glaucoma and cancers of different types.

Senior citizens use it mostly for treating pain

Pharmaceutical products provide only half the relief for only 30 to 40 percent of people according to a study in Canada.

Around 40 percent of people who use opioid painkillers also combine medical marijuana for better results.

Senior citizens above 65 who participated in the Colorado medical cannabis program, around 90 percent stated pain to be a medical condition, according to public health scientists in Iowa in their research paper.

However, there is a high need of the hour to study the effects of medical marijuana in senior citizens.

Medical marijuana served as a breakthrough among older patients

Some of the senior citizens complained that mere pharmaceutical drugs did not treat a number of excruciating pains so they preferred using aids like medical marijuana.

Many patients prescribed with injections do not want to undergo adverse circumstances. Doctors prescribed them with OxyContin, however, patients wanted to combine alcohol with the prescribed drug to counteract the immense pain. When given the option for marijuana, many of the older citizens hesitated at first, but on opting for it later on dynamically alleviated the symptoms.

Which marijuana product is most popular among U.S. senior citizens?

Senior citizens have agreed that using marijuana oil is better than smoking marijuana. As many of the senior citizens complain of having respiratory disorder symptoms, they prefer vaping oil as a way better substitute among all other products. Prescription opioids are a big negative among the patients as it is more likely to cause undesirable effects among the patients.

Patients often complain they have a fear of drug abuse issues in later age. So, there is a rising need to have the issue resolved by going for extensive study in the matter.

Patients feel the need that they have to withdraw opioids when they are prescribed with them especially in the case of post-surgical pain and acute pain.

With better research on the toxicity levels, medical marijuana is expected to be even more popular among senior citizens.
