Can Cannabis Reduce Heroin Addiction?

Published

The cannabidiol (CBD) is a nonpsychoactive compound in cannabis. Scientists have revealed that it might play an integral role in bringing down the withdrawal anxiety. It ultimately leads to prevent the individual to use opioid. Scientists have noted that CBD alleviates anxiety and cravings. That leads to a decline in overall pulse rate and stress hormones levels. The research appears in the American Journal of Psychiatry. It came out on May 21.

There is a lot of work going on finding ways to overcome certain addictions. Heroin addiction is specifically obnoxious in the addictive drug’s list. Often giving up the substance is not the only solution. The real challenge comes up when one has to go through stimuli and triggers that provoke the brain to use that substance again. Even the slightest sound and the blurriest visual holds a strong force on driving an individual towards the rebound.

Any individual dealing with drug addiction knows well how hard it is to get rid of the physical intimacy with the substance, let alone resisting the habit afterward. The triggering factors after the withdrawal create in them anxiety and to feel relief from the resulting stress, they ultimately fall back for the substance.

300,000 individuals are a victim of opioid addiction in the US

Currently, around three hundred thousand people in the United States have become a victim of the ever-increasing opioid epidemic. It is becoming critical to support these people in order to sustain their functionality in daily lives. Specialists prescribe Methadone and buprenorphine in order to medically break the addiction cycle. They target the same pathways that opioids follow in the nervous system. That way, the drugs bring down physical needs.

However, just like other medicines, they do not address the root cause of the underlying problem and badly fail to stop the individual from falling back in the trap given a stimulus. This is also because they do not help alleviate the withdrawal anxiety, which opens up more ways to re-enter the cycle.

Individuals in the study showed lower heart rates and stress levels

The scientists held a controlled and random trial of 42 sobers with the past history of heroin use. The individuals consumed CBD of dosage from 400 to 800 mg or placebo with intervals. This allowed scientists to examine the on spot and long term effects of CBD. The group who consumed CBD significantly showed lower symptoms of withdrawal anxiety on visual stimuli. They also manifested a marked alleviation in their pulse rates and stress hormone levels.

This research leads to a beneficial generalization that CBD might be effective in controlling other drug abuses as well. Since cannabis toxicity levels are quite impossible to reach, it makes the remedy even safer to use. This relapse prevention is literally life-saving for individuals and can be integral in declining death rates due to drug abuse.

UCC offers medical marijuana workshop

Governor Philip D. Murphy initiated the chief campaign to legalize marijuana in New Jersey. But the Democrats failed to gather enough support. Hence, all the efforts of Murphy derailed of legalizing the measure.

Regardless of the fact that Murphy has the Democratic control over the state assembly and senate, still he failed in convincing the lawmakers and faced the party’s disharmony. Especially African-American members of the Democrats opposed this legalization considering cannabis injurious to health.

Many also opposed the legalization of cannabis because of the challenges faced by the other states of the United States of America including how to stop residents from driving being in its influence and keep the teenagers away from drugs. Although Murphy failed to legalize cannabis in the state, the lessened limitations on the drug ultimately enhanced the opportunities for suppliers and patients.

The patients need to understand the pros and cons of cannabis. Dr. Michelle Shuffett, a consultant and a panelist in the upcoming workshop of the Union County College(UCC), pays heed to this fact because a preferred outcome of the medical cannabis for a single individual may be the aftereffect for someone else.

In an interview with LocalSource, Dr. Michelle Shuffett advised the patients to recognize the ingredients of cannabis, especially the quantity of CBD (cannabidiol) and THC (tetrahydrocannabinol).

Aim of the workshop

According to Jennifer, the organizer of the upcoming medical cannabis workshop and a counsel in the law firm, this event aims to train the public regarding the outcomes of medical cannabis. This would be the second event of UCC about medical cannabis. The first one was arranged in June by the name “Introduction to Cannabis”.

UCC is also planning to arrange the third workshop this year on Nov 7. After “Jake Honig Law” being signed by Murphy, this month’s workshop will be the first by UCC.

Jake Honig Law

The Jake Honig Law relieved the limitations of the quantity of medical cannabis any individual could purchase and the number of visits to the doctor was mandatory for such buying.

Dr. Michelle Shuffett is in favor of this law considering its ability to lessen the consumption of other medicines. Moreover, this law will attract new dispensaries and suppliers in the upcoming years due to its increasing demand.
Among other panelists, Dr. Kirten Parekh, a podiatric surgeon, will also be the one at the workshop. He is suffering from a chronic illness that has been undiagnosed for several years. He says that he went to 16 doctors, took many immune medicines, still his disease is unknown yet.

Dr. Parekh then started the research about the benefits of medical cannabis. Seeing its advantages, he started using cannabis and is very satisfied with the results. Dr. Parekh and his friend Scott Sundvor, who is the co-founder of Nima, have been suffering from the same chronic illness and both of them are much interested in using medical cannabis medications. Being a cannabis user, Dr. Parekh believes his aim is to guide the society about how to find things for their disease identification and how to contact the physician.

Many other countries followed this suit. However, the United States of America still could not decide whether to legalize cannabis or not.

Thailand on track to lead in medical marijuana products

Thailand regulated medical cannabis last year and became the first south-east nation to do so. According to the new development plan, Thailand would use CBD extracts to manufacture cosmetics, food and medicine. The country wants to increase its income through CBD products.

The medical cannabis demand of Thailand is expanding too. The country has omitted low-level cannabis from its list of prohibited narcotic substances.

Canada – Leading country in cannabis industry

After the legalization of cannabis in Canada in 2018, it is now the leading country in cannabis industry. There are many cannabis companies in Canada now including Canopy Growth, which is the largest CBC company.
